What is OICBA?

OICBA was formed in 1997 by a small group of independent stylists and barbers who rallied out of necessity to address issues surrounding the abolition of booth rental salons. OICBA has had many accomplishments since its creation:

Defeated House Bill 490 designed to abolish booth rental salons.
Obtained a permanent seat on the State Board of Cosmetology to help protect Independents.
An OICBA member attends all State Board of Cosmetology meetings and hearings to help ensure that proposed rule changes do not adversely affect independents.

Why join OICBA?

OICBA can help you set up your independent business, as well as assist you in the long run with techniques on how to run your independent salon business.

Some advantages of booth rental salon business:

Set your own schedule.
Make more money, allowing you to do tax write-offs that wouldn’t be possible in commission-only salon.

How hard is it to become an independent salon professional?

It’s easy as 1-2-3! If you can manage a checkbook and use an appointment book, you’re qualified to be an independent. From there, you’ll need to get a manager’s license an an independent license which are both fairly easy to acquire.

How hard is it to run an independent salon? Much easier than running a commission-only salon. The main thing you need to keep in mind is that your salon professionals are NOT your employees, they’re your tenants. You are the mall, they’re the stores.

What about taxes? Set your business up as an independent contractor using Federal Tax Form Sch. ‘C’ for deductions. You can get additional info at www.Irs.gov. Type in “independent contractor salon” under the search and you will find some basic rules to follow.

Annnual Education Seminar and Annual Membership Meeting. Over 100 members attend OICBA’s annual fall meeting to obtain mandatory CEU’s and gain valuable industry-related information.

OICBA E-mail newsletter with information to help you increase sales, understand business and taxation methods. -Several of our board members own their own salons and have extensive experience in booth renting.

OICBA Members can E-mail the board and get free help on specific problems encountered in running your own independent business and/or owning a salon.
